BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – For the Ursuline College soccer team, Wednesday's (Oct. 2) 4-0 conference win over host Salem International University followed much of the same script as Tuesday's (Oct. 1) 5-0 victory over Point Park University: dominate the first half and take a 1-0 lead into the break, come out of the intermission firing and let Jazzar and Ponchak keep the opponent's shots out of the net.
The Arrows are now 7-4 overall and 2-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference while Salem International slips to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Ursuline got on the scoreboard first with senior Cassie Fischer's first goal of the season off an assist from junior Anna Feitl. That was the only strike on either side in the first half but the Arrows, as they did on Tuesday, came out clicking on all cylinders in the second period.
Junior Paige Rowan scored her 11th goal of the season off an assist from senior Amanda Levaskevich to get the second half started on the right note before freshman Cassie Cripe widened the lead when she scored off a beautiful free kick by sophomore Giuliana Pugliese. Cripe one-touched the ball, which came from nearly 40 yards out, home for her fourth goal of the season and then sophomore Vanessa Consiglio put the match out of reach off another Feitl assist.
For the second consecutive game, freshman Helen Jazzar and junior Amanda Ponchak combined for a team shutout with Jazzar handling the bulk of the action in goal.
Ursuline will return to the state of West Virginia on Saturday (Oct. 5) for a 1:00 p.m. match at
Ohio Valley University. The Fighting Scots are 1-1 in conference play before hosting
Cedarville University (3-0 G-MAC) tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
After Saturday, five of UC's final six regular season matches will be held at the friendly confines of the Ursuline College Soccer Field.
