Sue Woodford announced the addition of Erin Gabriel to the coaching staff.
Â
Gabriel, a native of Poland, Ohio, graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2016 after one of the most successful careers in Volunteer softball history. She will work this fall with the Arrows pitching staff in preparation for the 2017 season.
Â
As a senior, Gabriel set a single-season career high in wins with 21 and had a career-low ERA (2.36). She also had career-highs in games started (30), appearances (38), innings pitched (145.1), complete games (eight) and strikeouts (178).
Â
On March 22 against Jacksonville she tossed her second career perfect game, striking out seven batters. She was named SEC Pitcher of the Week last February and also had a stretch of 34 strikeouts over 21 2/3 innings while posting a 0.97 ERA. She is one of only four Volunteers in school history to have a no hitter and a perfect game in her career.
Â
At Poland High School she led the Bulldogs to a 26-3 record and a number 21 overall ranking in the Powerade Fab 50 and led Poland to the 2011 State Championship. She was named back-to-back Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011.
Â
Out of high school, Gabriel had offers from UCLA, Kentucky and Notre Dame before choosing Tennessee.
Â
Coach Woodford on Erin: "I've been following the hometown favorite, Erin Gabriel since she was a junior in high school. We, from the Youngstown area, are very proud of Erin and what she has accomplished in her career. Moreover, Erin is a superb coach with a great eye for detail and she possesses a wealth of information. She relates very well to our players and we are very grateful to have Erin as part of our staff!"
