INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Senior goalkeeper Rachael Smith was named as the first-ever recipient of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference’s 'Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week' award, the league office announced on Monday afternoon (Sept. 3).
Her stellar goalkeeping helped the Arrows start the year 2-0, making Ursuline the only school in the conference to pick up a win in women’s soccer during the first weekend of the season.
Smith made two stops on Friday (Aug. 31) as the Arrows knocked off Shepherd University, 1-0, in what was her 18th career shutout. The following day, she came up big with five saves as Ursuline defeated host Pitt-Johnstown, 2-1, in overtime.
Through the first weekend of the season, Smith ranks first in the conference in wins (two), goals against average (0.47), minutes played (181:46), save percentage (.875) and shutouts (1).
Smith and the Arrows host Walsh University on Saturday (Sept. 8) at 1:00 p.m. at the Ursuline College Soccer Field.
