Ursuline advances to OIC finals with 3-0 win over #2 Walsh

Kelsey Bascombe slowed down a speedy Walsh attack
The Ursuline College soccer team advances into the finals of the Ohio Independent Championship Tournament after a dominating 3-0 win over second seeded Walsh University on Friday afternoon at Brush High School. Freshman Paige Rowan scored two goals in the game, both of which extended the lead after Heather Beachy scored the game's first goal in the tenth minute.

Less than a minute after Rowan caused some contact in the box, which allowed Beachy to come free and put the Arrows up 1-0, Rowan received tremendous touch passes from Jaimie Grindle and Amanda Levaskevich to give Ursuline a solid two goal lead.

Ursuline will face either #1 Notre Dame College or #4 Cedarville University on Saturday, November 5 at 5:00 p.m. in the finals of the OIC. Ursuline tied Notre Dame, 1-1 at home in the regular season and defeated Cedarville, 1-0 on the road.

UC held strong defensively against Walsh as Leah Sweet, Brittany Prato, Kelsey Bascombe, and Hillary Crookston held the back line attack after attack, and when they did falter - Rachael Smith came up big and kept the shutout alive.

In the 19th minute, Prato deflected a shot from only five yards out that would have easily cut the lead in half with plenty of time for Walsh to gain the momentum. Three minutes later, Walsh had a clean breakaway and Smith had two choices - hold her ground or charge the ball. She charged the ball and made a great diving save at the feet of the attacker, forcing an early shot.

With one last chance at the 76th minute mark, Smith basically shut the door on Walsh's season as Bascombe was taken out by a Walsh forward, and no foul was called, leaving a long break away and a one-on-one attack against Smith. The attacker put a shot nearside on the net, and Smith dove and got just enough to deflect it out-of-bounds. Then three minutes later, Rowan kicked the door close as Grindle slid a pass to Anna Feitl, who crossed the ball to the right side and Rowan put it in the back of the net before the goalkeeper could recover.

This was the teams first ever win over Walsh in the eighth meeting between the schools, and will be the final meeting in a conference style match-up as Ursuline moves forward in the NCAA Division II with the G-MAC and Walsh moves to join the GLIAC.
